What is a Crime Prevention District

A Crime Prevention District is a community focused district, that once approved, will levy a fee to property owners within the district to fund an increase in security and off-duty police patrols.  These districts are typically formed when concerned community members recognize an increase in crime and come together in concern for the children and elderly residents who may be at the highest risk. Passed in 2012, the Melrose Ease Crime Prevention District was overwhelmingly approved by the community. Each property owner will pay up to $200 annually per improved residential parcel and an initial fee of up to $500 for commercial property. The fee would be for 10 years, beginning in 2013 and ending in 2022. The revenue created by the CPD is estimated to be $75,000 to $100,000 in the first year. Crime Prevention Districts offer a sustainable effort to improve crime prevention and effectively address blighted properties on a consistent basis. Melrose East extends from Lobdell Boulevard west to North Ardenwood Drive and from Florida Boulevard north to Renoir Avenue. The Melrose East Crime Prevention District is a critical component to the success in stabilizing and maintaining a safer environment for our community.
